Due to the ongoing diplomatic situation, UAE residents have been strongly advised to carefully consider any opinions publicly posted on social media.
Following the suspension of flights to Qatar, and the cutting off of Qatari broadcasters, the UAE General Prosecutor Hamad Saif Al-Shamsi has clarified the current laws in place with regards to publishing posts of sympathy for Qatar online.
Posting messages of support by UAE residents is a punishable offence by law. The consequences can range from a three-to-15-year sentence, or a minimum of a Dhs500,000/$137,000 fine.
In the eyes of the law, support or sympathy for Qatar is a cybercrime, which is being taken very seriously in light of recent developments.
